Chair succession at Community Housing Ltd

John De Vries

After more than 17 years of service to CHL, John De Vries will resign from his position as Director and Chair of the Board, with the Board of Directors endorsing current non-executive director Sonya Beyers as the replacement, as of 2 September 2026.

Sonya has assumed the role effective immediately to support a formal, well-planned transition over the coming months. John will stand down from his Board positions across CHL and its subsidiary entities at the conclusion of CHL’s Annual General Meeting in November 2026.

Throughout his tenure, John brought considerable experience in risk, change and financial management, which has supported CHL’s growth in the community housing sector and work across Australia.

John’s commitment to tenants, staff and the sector more broadly is unquestioned and will be acknowledged at the upcoming CHL AGM.

Looking ahead, Sonya is a highly regarded non-executive director who joined the CHL Board in 2025, recognised for her broad independent directorship experience across multiple sectors. She brings deep commercial experience, informed by her legal expertise and extensive background supporting boards on governance and effective decision-making.

CHL’s Interim CEO Alicia Follent says, “As Chair of the Board, and a member of the CHL Audit, Risk and Compliance Committee and the CHL Governance Committee, John has provided significant strategic leadership to our organisation and strong support and guidance to our Executive team. We are incredibly grateful to John for laying the path for a strong future for CHL and we wish him well in his next professional and personal endeavours.

“I also congratulate Sonya on her new appointment as CHL’s Chair of the Board. As an Executive team, we look forward to working with Sonya in this important leadership role, taking forward John’s legacy as CHL continues to grow and deliver much-needed housing for communities across the country.”
