CHL Chile’s (CHLA) Santo Domingo 2 project was nominated for the 2018 Premio Aporte Urbano (PAU) Award. This prestigious national award recognises building projects that make significant and outstanding contribution to the quality of Chilean cities and their inhabitants. Prizes are awarded across several categories in the field of construction including high-rise buildings, ecological buildings and urban interventions. The Santo Domingo 2 project was selected for the Best Social Integration Project Award. From the 46 entries in this category, only three finalists were chosen for final judging.
On December 15th, 2018 the award ceremony took place in Santiago and the prize presented by Pritzer Prize Laureate, Alejandro Aravena. CHLA received recognition and was awarded second place. First prize was awarded to a 1,300 unit project on the outskirts of Santiago.
Santo Domingo 2 is a small city renewal project comprising of twenty-three units of one to three bedrooms. It is located in Valparaiso, a major coastal city. The fact that this project was nominated for a national prize confirms CHLA’s strategy to deliver not only affordable, quality housing but also to integrate buildings in an urban context and have a positive impact on both clients and the city.
The main qualifications for Santa Domingo 2 were its vicinity to the city center – proving that Social Housing does not have to be on the periphery of the city. Also, the mix in size and quality of the dwellings which allows the incorporation of different social classes, and urban integration into the fabric of the city.
