Launceston born sporting legends former Australian Test captain Ricky Ponting and Champion Boxer Daniel Geale today presented scholarships to successful recipients from the northern suburbs of Launceston as part of Community Housing Ltd’s (CHL) inaugural Scholarship Program.
CHL is a national not for profit affordable housing provider and has introduced this Scholarship Program for young adults between 12-18 years of age living in a CHL managed house under the Better Housing Futures Program in the suburbs of Mayfield, Mowbray, Ravenswood, Rocherlea and Waverly.
The program included three scholarships capped at $3,500 and aimed to enhance the skills and further the social and professional development of the recipients with a view to securing employment in the future. The Scholarship Program has received a positive response from the community with CHL presenting four scholarships with two in education and one in sports and performing arts each.
Besides the two sporting icons the ceremony was attended by the Mayor of Launceston Albert Van Zetten and Sarah Courtney MP representing Hon. Jacquie Petrusma, Minister for Human Services and Minister for Women along with the successful recipients and their families.

Delighted to announce the scholarships, Steve Bevington, Managing Director of CHL said, “Each of the successful applicant put forward a very heart-warming and compelling reason to secure the scholarship. The kids in these communities have huge potential and aspirations and we want to support them to fulfil them.
We recognise the financial barriers that can hinder enrolment into study for the disadvantaged and vulnerable young adults and without the monetary support they often miss out on opportunities and stay in the poverty cycle. We are attempting to change that.”
“This is literally life changing”, says Hamish Wooders, one of the successful recipients. “The opportunity to travel to the States and experience the tour is just unbelievable.”
Pleased to be handing out the scholarships, Ricky Ponting said, “It is a great initiative by Community Housing Ltd. All the kids deserve a chance to pursue their interests and programs such as this can make a real difference in their lives.”
“It is great to see Community Housing Limited investing in kids rom suburbs like Rocherlea and Ravenswood. The same suburbs I grew up in”, says Daniel Geale.
Thanking both Ricky and Daniel for their incredible support to this scholarship initiative, Steve said, “It is an exciting day for these young adults as they not only get the scholarship to pursue their dream but they also get to meet their role models in Ricky and Daniel. We are grateful to them for taking time out of their busy schedules to come down especially for this ceremony.”
Recipient of the Sports Scholarship, Callum Harrison said “Today is a special day for me as I’ve got a chance to meet Ricky and Daniel. The scholarship will allow me to follow my dreams on the sporting field exactly like these two inspirational people who are from Launceston. I want to thank CHL and everyone involved in this program for this amazing opportunity.”
“CHL is proud to have introduced this initiative which is a step closer to fulfilling our mission of creating opportunity and strengthening the community”, adds Steve.
Why did CHL introduce the Scholarship Program for these suburbs?
Historically these suburbs are referred to as low socio economic areas in Launceston with a very high unemployment rate with approximately 60 per cent of all residents over the age of 15 being either unemployed or their employment status is unknown.
CHL is attempting to improve this situation and is committed to supporting the long-term community development and social inclusion of these suburbs by providing opportunities to advance education, skills building, employment, and general wellbeing.
