National community housing provider, Community Housing Limited (CHL) has taken another important step forward in the East Kimberley by winning the tender to manage 40 new transitional homes in Kununurra as part of first of its kind social program being implemented in partnership with Wunan Foundation.
With CHL providing tenancy management and maintenance services, these homes are termed ‘transitional’ because the goal of the program is to have properties available for purchase by tenants when their financial and personal capacity is such that they are ready to transition to alternative tenures, including shared equity or private home ownership. “This program is a hand up for locals who are ready to challenge themselves and see what they can achieve. All the properties have been successfully tenanted with those meeting the eligibility criteria,” says Steve Bevington, MD, Community Housing Ltd.
The objective of this program is to bring about positive social change for Aboriginal people and their families by providing housing and program services that support participants to take control of their future. The support model looks to intensively engage people in employment and also education through case management, internal and external service providers.
“CHL and Wunan have entered into a strong partnership that is based not only on the provision of Management and Support Services respectively, but also on developing an improved housing continuum in the East Kimberley”, says Shane Hamilton, WA State Manager for CHL.
“CHL has made a serious commitment to this region. We have developed constructive working relationships with other like minded organisations as well as completing renovations worth $1.1million on the original 231 properties we’re managing,” says Mr. Bevington.
“We have expanded to a larger office in Kununurra and the staff we have hired are proactive in their communication with local people and community leaders,” says Mr. Hamilton.
