WILES HOUSE

This world class refurbished shared supported disability accommodation, popularly known as ‘Wiles House’ is located in Maryborough.

Redesigned, built and managed by Community Housing Ltd (CHL), the innovative high quality development is designed to the Australian Standard for Accessibility and Platinum criteria for disabled access making it fully SDA compliant under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) which is due to be rolled out in the next two years.

The facility includes three affordable and accessible independent disability units for those with high and complex support needs living in long-stay health care or aged care facilities.

This architecturally designed home supports people with a disability under the age of 65 years and includes a guest bedroom attached to each unit for overnight accommodation – providing 24/7 access to support.

Funded under the Queensland Governments Accommodation for People in Residential Aged Care Project the redevelopment project has received a contribution of $526,519 by Queensland Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services this project is a result of a collaborative partnership between CHL, the Queensland government and the Community Lifestyles Agency. An additional amount of $58,000 has been contributed by CHL towards works to include special assistive technology in the house design for high support needs.

To help develop a sense of “community”, an attractive common area has been developed for the use and benefit of all residents and their families. This area includes spacious gardens and common grounds.

The innovative development includes the following accessible design features:

  • Fully wheelchair accessible
  • Accessible bathrooms, including laundry facilities
  • Ceiling mounted hoists to provide transfer from the bedroom to the bathroom
  • Wiring for provision of remotely operated intercom, door openers and electrically operated blinds
  • External ramps to a generously sized under cover porch
  • A second bedroom for each unit to provide overnight accommodation
  • Open plan living area with accessible kitchen
  • Common community space and manicured gardens

CHL will be responsible for the on-going property and tenancy management of this refurbished facility.
