National not for profit community housing provider, Community Housing Ltd (CHL ) has introduced a Community Scholarship Program for all young adults between the age of 12-18 years old living in a CHL managed property in the suburbs of Mayfield, Mowbray, Ravenswood, Rocherlea and Waverly.
Community Housing Ltd is offering 3 scholarships capped at $3,500 to any young tenant seeking to undertake vocational study in the area of education, sport and performing arts.
The program aims to provide an opportunity to young people to enhance their skills and further their social and professional development with a view to securing employment in the future.
Announcing the program, Steve Bevington, Managing Director of Community Housing Ltd said, “CHL values education and firmly believes in equal opportunity for all its tenants. We recognise the financial barriers that can hinder enrolment into study for the disadvantaged and vulnerable young adults and therefore this program is an initiative to provide financial assistance to those who wish to pursue vocational education opportunities and enhance their skills and create a path for their future.
Historically these suburbs are referred to as low socio economic areas in Launceston with a very high unemployment rate with approximately 60 per cent of all residents over the age of 15 being either unemployed or their employment status is unknown.
CHL is attempting to improve this situation and is committed to supporting the long term community development and social inclusion of these suburbs by providing opportunities to advance education, skills building, employment, and general wellbeing.
“The aim of the scholarship program is to more broadly work towards addressing this social disadvantage by creating access to opportunities for the youth living in these areas to acquire and enhance skills in the areas of arts, education and sports”, adds Steve.
The application and guidelines forms have been posted out all the tenants ten days ago and CHL has been experiencing a high level of interest from the community with a large number of enquiries being received by our staff.
The last date for submitting the applications is Friday 2nd October after which an independent panel will review each application and select candidates based on a combination of demonstrated need and relevance of the course to their personal interest and future employment opportunities.
The shortlisted recipients will be invited to a Scholarship Event on Saturday October 24th and will be presented with the scholarship in front of their families and local community leaders.
