National not-for-profit housing provider, Community Housing Ltd (CHL) is celebrating the first anniversary of its operations in the northern suburbs of Launceston. In July 2014 CHL took over the management of close to 1200 social housing properties from Housing Tasmania as part of the Better Housing Futures reform.
To mark the occasion CHL is organising a series of rolling celebrations with its tenants and community members. Neighbourhood parties are being held in Ravenswood, Rocherlea, Waverley, Mowbray and Mayfield which include a BBQ Lunch and kid’s activities starting from July 13.
Speaking on the anniversary Steve Bevington, Managing Director of CHL says, “In the past year CHL tenants have enjoyed a range of benefits including the option of signing up to a CHL lease, secure and ongoing tenure, localised services, property improvements, energy assessments, heating and insulation improvements.”
CHL has installed over 120 heat pumps with plans to deliver another 160 over the next 12 months and our commitment will not stop there.”
Since taking over the management of the properties we have also provided training and employment opportunities to local residents and have supported and participated in local community development activities such as community gardens, family fun days, sporting and fishing activities.
CHL have worked closely with its tenants and broader community to ensure engagement and consultation in renewing neighbourhoods, improving the quality of existing housing and promoting the health and wellbeing of CHL residents through activities and initiatives.
CHL has established productive partnerships with a range of local organisations and support agencies such as Anglicare, the Ravenswood Heights Primary School, Ravenswood Neighbourhood House and Rocherlea Football club and has been engaging with the local community to develop initiatives that would bring people together.
“As the Principal of Ravenswood Heights Primary School, I have been impressed by the community development initiatives that CHL have been able to implement over the last 12 months. As a school community we are proud of what we have achieved in partnership with CHL and look forward to developing our relationship into the future”, says Zachary Taylor, Principal Ravenswood Heights Primary School.
“We’ve really appreciated the speed with which CHL have been able to house people. CHL always try and make things work; they’re flexible and tailor their approach to each situation instead of adopting a ‘one-size-fits-all’ way or working. They’re always easy to contact and get back to you really quickly which makes things so much easier when you’re trying to house people who are often really stressed out. Moving can be really stressful for people especially when they have a lot of other things going on in their life”
“We have a really good working relationship with CHL, their staff are really flexible and together we get some really great outcomes for clients”, says the staff from Anglicare Housing Connect.
According to Melissa Palframan, State Manager for Tasmania, “First anniversary celebrations commenced at the Pioneer Parade Community Garden with a community fun day held jointly by the Ravenswood Community House and CHL. Around 100 local residents participated in a BBQ lunch, celebratory cake, pot decorating and planting [thanks to the kind support and time from Bunnings Warehouse] face painting, jumping castle and a chance for the local residents to see some proposed concepts and have input into a further expansion of the community garden.”
CHL is committed to supporting long term goals in these suburbs by working with the communities to make them safer, better and stronger with more employment opportunities, community development activities and exciting events to come.
