National community housing provider Community Housing Limited’s (CHL) subsidiary Community Housing (VIC) Ltd [CHVL] has won the Housing Industry Association’s Victorian State title for ‘Special Purpose Housing’ project for the fourth time.
The award was won for CHL’s innovative 20 unit development in Hastings, Victoria which was officially opened earlier this year by Minister Greg Hunt. This unique development offers low cost, long-term rental housing to the elderly, intellectually and physically disabled and those on low incomes with preference given to people with ties to the local area.
The award was decided on the basis of good design, high quality of construction, and the functionality of the development based on the tenant group.
“These awards are a tremendous credit to our Design and Construction staff and recognise the expertise the team has developed in constructing quality housing that’s affordable. Their talents have been recognised yet again for an outstanding development in Hastings this time,” says CHL’s Managing Director Steve Bevington.
“At CHL we are focused at delivering interesting and innovative designs that are quality built. It’s pleasing to be delivering a good product all round, and we know tenants appreciate it too.”
The project was a result of a successful partnership between the Frankston Peninsula Carers Inc. (FPC Inc), the Department of Human Services [DHS], Mornington Peninsula Shire Council [MPSC] and CHVL).
Integrated into the site is a group home built by the Department of Human Services and managed by Karingal Konnections for people with a disability and offering them 24-hour care.
To help develop a sense of community, an attractive common area has been developed for the use and benefit of all residents and their families. This area includes raised garden beds, outdoor landscaping and seating and an enclosed Gazebo with a built in BBQ.
