CHL SECURES SA GOVERNMENT FUNDING

CHL SECURES A THIRD OF FUNDING UNDER SA GOVERNMENT’S $20 MILLION STIMULUS PACKAGE

National not for profit housing provider, Community Housing Limited (CHL) has been announced as one of the nine recipients of the South Australian Government’s $20 million stimulus package aimed at providing 128 new affordable homes across South Australia and in turn stimulating the construction industry.

CHL has received more than $6.4 million for delivering 25 new homes for those on high-needs specially those living with a mental health difficulty out of the total 82 homes that are to be built for people with high support needs.

“CHL is delighted to be a recipient of the Stimulus Package funding announced by SA Government. We would like to thank and congratulate the government for their vision and initiative in delivering good social and economic outcomes for South Australians and look forward to working with the Department in delivering much needed affordable housing in the State”, adds Steve Bevington, Managing Director Community Housing Ltd Group of Companies.

CHL will be delivering these homes in close partnership with Rivergum Homes Group and NEAMI National who will provide a range of support services for people with a mental illness, which include individual outreach, group rehabilitation programs, supported housing and art based programs.

These 25 homes will be located in Parafield Gardens (10), Largs North (4) and Murray Bridge (11) and will be developed with 15% equity contribution by CHL. The projects include 10 x 3 bedroom town houses in Parafield Gardens, 4x 2 bedroom apartments in Largs North, and 11 x 3 bedroom houses in Murray Bridge. Construction of all houses is scheduled for completion by the end of next year.

The demand for affordable housing for those with high needs is on a rise. For people living with a mental health illness, housing stress coupled with financial stress, the stress of unemployment or living with poor health can be seen as a consequence or contributing factor to mental illness.

“People living with a mental health difficulty are entitled to access good affordable housing, coordinated and integrated support and priority assistance to restore their health, avoid homelessness, and break the medical cycle. CHL’s partnership with NEAMI will ensure that wrap around services are made available to those who ultimately move into these homes”, adds Steve.

CHL is a registered growth provider in South Australia and currently has an 82 dwelling portfolio in Adelaide under several Federal and State housing programs including National Rental Affordability Scheme (NRAS), Nation Building and Economic Stimulus Package and STS.

CHL has also received 180 incentives in Round 4 of NRAS due for delivery in 2014.
