Through NRAS 1, CHL has been able to deliver a significant tranche of new community homes
Community Housing Limited (CHL) has completed 46 of 100 planned dwellings across the northern Tasmanian coast, with the remaining 54 dwelling due for completion by June 2011.
As a national provider of community housing with an in-house design and construction capability, the not-for-profit housing organisation has designed and project managed the properties while creating employment opportunities for local sub-contractors.
In keeping with its inclusive and consultative housing development model, CHL has forged a strong partnership with Anglicare Tasmania, which has included conducting focus groups with support agencies in order to ensure effective support for tenants.
“All tenants are either directly off the public housing waiting list or are eligible for public housing, and we are keen to ensure their experience with community housing is a positive one,” says CHL’s Managing Director Steve Bevington.
The first 46 properties are dotted along the north coast which includes the towns of Launceston, Burnie, Latrobe, and Ulverson. The remaining development will see CHL deliver properties in Latrobe and Launceston and then move south to Hobart.
“An area of importance for CHL is the quality of the properties we are developing. In order to keep our maintenance costs to a minimum over time, we are committed to smart design. That design also incorporates energy efficient measures and environmentally sensitive design features which results in better living standards and lower utility costs for tenants,” says Mr. Bevington.
CHL has a maintenance team in place to service its newest tenants and ensure the properties are maintained, and has plans to grow its presence throughout the State.
“CHL is supporting these properties by also building its operations in Tasmania. By the time the project is concluded in July 2011 we plan to have offices in Devonport, Launceston and Hobart,” he says.
