Community Housing Limited (CHL) is relieved to report that its office in Valparaiso, located in Central Chile, was unaffected by the massive 8.8 magnitude quake that delivered its most devastating effects in the south of the country.
“Certainly the quake was felt very strongly throughout our region, however, our building wasn’t impacted and we’re continued our operations with our administration intact. The level of devastation, especially in buildings outside the major cities has been considerable, and we are already in talks with the government to understand how we can best assist with re-building,” says Michael Bier, CHL’s Country Manager.
Mr. Bier says the Chilean Government has been receptive to calling on the housing expertise of CHL, one of a key group of architects, engineers, and building contractors whose knowledge and experience will be used to help re-build the country safely as the community and the economy gets back on its feet.
“Within a few hours, this event blew out the Chilean housing deficit tenfold,” says Mr. Bier. “Considering the magnitude of the quake, the fifth strongest since records exist, human loss was minimal but rebuilding the country will take several years. And historic cities like Valparaiso, Curico, Talca, and many other smaller villages, have lost a big part of their heritage buildings, which will change their character forever.”
For almost one year, CHL has been in partnership with Un Techo Para Chile (‘A Roof for Chile’) to build 44 dwellings that will provide a sustainable housing option to those families currently in housing transition. CHL has also established a partnership with Pacific Architecture Chile for local building and design advice and services.
As a person regularly in contact with a variety of groups within Chile, Mr. Bier is available for interview in regards to the general situation in the country, and is able to make comment on the after-math and future of Chile after this extraordinary natural disaster.
