CHL LAUNCHES NEW REGIONAL OFFICE IN PORT MACQUARIE

Following its merger with Mid-North Coast Community Housing, Australia’s first national community housing provider Community Housing Limited (CHL) today launched its new regional office in Port Macquarie which will serve as the principal office for the NSW northern region stretching from the Queensland border to the Hunter Valley region of NSW. CHL has four other offices along the mid north coast that includes West Kempsey, Wingham, Coffs Harbour, alongside offices in Wollongong and metropolitan Sydney.

Community Housing Ltd is approved to operate as a national housing provider in Victoria, NSW, WA, SA, and Tasmania where it manages more than 2000 properties with a plan to expand its annual growth to 1000 properties by 2012.

The new office in Port Macquarie was inaugurated by Peter Besseling, MP, Member for Port Macquarie amidst other representatives from Housing NSW, Port Macquarie – Hastings Council, Christopher Shields CHL Chairman and Steve Bevington Managing Director CHL.

“We presently have 19 staff in this region who manage operations in this region. With an approval of more than 1000 properties in this region, this new office has the capacity to accommodate the anticipated growth. This office will be extremely helpful in supporting the growth of our in-house design, project management, and construction divisions across NSW, and this team will play a key role in the growth plan for the state,” says Mr. Steve Bevington.

Overall the tenants for these properties will include people from low to moderate incomes who have been excluded from the general rental market. We would also like to target 20% of the tenants for supported housing and also provide a proportion of homes to aboriginal households and people experiencing homelessness, says Mr. Bevington.

After receiving its growth provider status in NSW, CHL has been exploring opportunities to expand operations across the state. CHL is currently growing its housing portfolio in NSW primarily through stock transfers from Housing NSW which provide a basis for leverage to undertake new construction of properties that are designed and developed in-house. CHL currently manage 800 properties in NSW, and expect total stock numbers to double to1500 by the end of the 2009-10 financial year.
